Network Rail wanted to replace the station’s old light fittings as part of a platform refurbishment. The old fittings had reached the end of their life cycle and ‘poor lighting’ was cited as a major complaint about the station in a commuter survey carried out by Southern Rail. Lux levels were also too low in some areas for CCTV colour cameras to operate satisfactorily. Sill’s experience in railway lighting was instrumental in the company’s
specification as Network Rail project manager Anthony Marley explained; “We
selected Sill for its reputation and for its previous work on rail projects
such as the Jubilee Line Extension and Stratford Terminal. As well as
meeting Her Majesty’s Railway Inspectorate and other statutory
requirements, quality, efficiency, reliability and longevity of fittings
was high on our requirements.”

The Sill fittings were pre-mounted four to a pod, this being a bespoke
chassis pre-assembled and pre-wired complete with all attachments for
PA/VA and CCTV equipment, and a compact fluorescent 408 series
projector for emergency use. Each pod was finished and palletised at
Sill for delivery right to where it was needed. The pods were then raised
up, bolted on, wired into the existing cable systems and the luminaires
simply unfolded ready for use, all making for a fast and cost effective
installation with little disruption.
